Gating delivers metal into the casting cavity. Feeding supplies metal where needed as the casting solidifies. Although these functions interact, solving a filling problem does not automatically solve a shrinkage problem. Gating and feeding design should therefore be evaluated as part of the complete solidification route.

Start with the sections that are difficult to fill

Thin connections, long flow paths and changes in direction can influence how metal reaches the final regions of a cavity. Gate position and the feed-system arrangement must suit the geometry and alloy. A layout that works for a compact component may be unsuitable for a long branching one.

The objective is not simply to pour faster. The foundry needs a controlled route that fills the component while managing the consequences of flow and heat loss. The actual equipment and mold arrangement matter to that assessment.

Identify where metal must remain available during cooling

Heavy local sections can solidify differently from adjacent thinner regions. If a region becomes isolated from an effective feed path while it still requires liquid metal, internal soundness can be affected. The geometry and thermal sequence should be reviewed together.

A proposed rib or boss may improve stiffness yet create a difficult junction. Discuss the manufacturing consequence of that feature before approving the final model. A modest transition change can be more useful than attempting to compensate for an avoidable geometry problem later.

Gate removal is part of the design decision

The attachment location influences cleaning and finishing after the casting is separated from the assembly. A gate on an inaccessible or tightly controlled surface can create extra work or risk. The selected position should be compatible with the delivered surface requirements.

Where a surface will be machined anyway, its role in the manufacturing route may differ from a visible as-cast contour. The foundry and designer should agree any local stock or finishing expectations clearly.

Confirm the route with evidence

Simulation and sample examination can support development, but neither replaces a defined acceptance requirement. The critical regions and required inspection should be known before the production layout is finalized.
